Although there are hundreds of energy centers (Chakras) in the human body, you will learn about the seven main Reiki Chakras. These Reiki Chakras play an integral part in the human energy system (otherwise known as the human Aura) and our overall wellbeing. These Reiki Chakras may be compared to the gears in a machine and if one does not function properly, it affects all the other Chakras and our general wellbeing. Over and above the seven main Reiki Chakras, we also have Chakras in our hands (palms) and at the bottom of our feet. These Chakras are used to draw and channel Reiki energy and the Reiki energy is channeled to the client through the palm Chakras. If you intend on practicing Reiki, you will need to understand the seven main Reiki Chakras, as you will be required to scan your client’s energy system, in order to establish whether there are any energy blockages.
So let’s start with a basic overview of the seven main Reiki Chakras:
Located at the base of the spine. Associated with the color red and the Earth Element. Attributed to the physical body, vitality, solidity, survival, grounding and foundation. Associated with the feet legs, arms, intestines, teeth, nails, anus, rectum cell structure, adrenal glands, blood and prostate.
Develops from the time of conception to age one. Babies touch everything, as they are learning how to use their bodies. (Trust and attachment.)
When this Reiki Chakra is balanced we feel alive, free, optimistic, healthy, full of vitality and steady. When it is underactive one tends to be anxious, worry, lack the will to live, apathy (masochistic behavior.) When it is overactive one tends to feel aggressive, greedy, overbearing and have extreme or overwhelming energy levels.)
Located in the centre between the navel and pelvic bone. Associated with the color orange and the Water Element. Attributed to movement, reproduction, inner child, pleasure, polarity, creativity, sexuality and sensuality. Associated with the reproductive organs, bladder, kidneys, pelvis, sperm (fluids and liquids in the body.) Develops between six and eighteen months. Here babies start developing their senses (growth spurt.) The “inner child” lives here. This is the most important of the Chakras, as this development period defines our emotions for the rest of our lives.
When this Reiki Chakra is balanced we feel open, creative, and trusting. When it is underactive one tends to be shy, uncertain, hyper- sensitive, feel a lack of purpose. When it is overactive one tends to feel jealous, elf-absorbed, short-tempered, and distrust others.
Solar Plexus Chakra
Located in the diaphragm area. Associated with the color yellow and the Fire Element. Attributed to the power centre, will, purpose, confidence, self-expression, and shadow self. Associated with the stomach (digestive system), abdomen, gall bladder, spleen, liver, pancreas, lower back and the autonomic nervous system. Develops between eighteen months and three years. Babies start developing their own “will” and toddlers learn how to do things for themselves. They also learn about discipline and how to control their behavior.
When this Reiki Chakra is balanced we feel happy, safe and confident (powerful.) When it is underactive one tends to be judgemental, personal disapproval, inability to be assertive and fear of authority. When it is overactive one tends to feel angry, controlling, frustrated, perfectionism and also issues with authority.
Located in the centre of the chest. Associated with the color green (or pink) and the Air Element. Attributed to the compassion centre, love, surrender, joy, balance, respect. This is an important healing and spiritual centre. Associated with the heart, chest, rib cage, lower lungs, upper back, skin, abdominal cavity, thymus gland and the circulatory system. Develops between the ages of four and seven. This is when we develop feelings/empathy. Sexuality also develops now. We learn about balance. The relationship one has with your mother at this age serves as a template for all your future relationships. Damage to this Chakra causes damage to the emotions and empathy.
When this Reiki Chakra is balanced we experience unconditional love, acceptance, compassion, forgiveness and trust. When it is underactive one tends to experience feelings of being unloved, self-pity, unworthiness, fear of rejection. When it is overactive one tends to be selfish, manipulating (emotionally) and melodramatic.
Located between the inner collar bones. Associated with the color light blue and the Sound Element. Attributed to expression, creativity, ability to relate to others, contemplation, nourishment centre. Associated with the throat, voice, vocal cords, thyroid (and thyroid gland), lungs, neck, nape of neck, as well as the jaw. Develops between the ages of seven and twelve. This is when we start exploring the world. We learn to communicate about what we want.
When this Reiki Chakra is balanced we feel free, truthful, inspired, communicate in a loving manner and have self-belief. When it is underactive, one tends to feel introverted, experience difficulty of speech and inability to stand up for oneself. When it is overactive one tends to talk excessively, be arrogant/domineering and inability to listen.
Brow Chakra (Third Eye)
Located between the eyes. Associated with the color indigo and the Light Element. Attributed to wisdom, perception, visualization, higher consciousness (intuition) and self-awareness. Associated with the eyes, face, nose, sinus, pituitary gland and cerebellum. Develops during the teenage years. This is when we start to push certain boundaries. This is when we develop our sense of identity and independence.
When this Reiki Chakra is balanced we experience clarity, insightfulness and courage. When it underactive one tends to have a lack of imagination and fear of success. (Mental illness can occur in extreme cases.) When it is overactive one tends to feel confused, have an overactive imagination and lack of concentration.
Located at the top/centre of the head. Associated with the color violet or white and with the Thought Element. Attributed to the Spiritual centre, direct link to the universal consciousness. Associated with the brain, skull, pineal gland and the cerebellum. Develops from age twenty three to twenty five and continues for the rest of our lives. This is when we start questioning everything. This is also a period of learning, we want to gain knowledge.
When this Reiki Chakra is balanced we experience a deep spiritual connection, awareness and a sense of interconnectedness. When it is underactive one tends to feel a lack of spiritual connectedness, separation and a need for control. When it is overactive one tends to lean towards extreme religious or spiritual and egotistical behavior.
